Council Votes to Close Runway

The Waterloo City Council voted to close one of the runways at Waterloo Regional Airport, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The council voted unanimously to close runway 6-24, which is the shortest of the three runways at the airport. The condition of the runway had become a liability concern with estimates for repairing cracks around $300,000 and a complete rebuild likely to cost close to $2 million. The Federal Aviation Administration said they would not help pay for either considering the runway handles less than 3% of the traffic. Pilots of smaller aircraft had argued that the runway was necessary when crosswinds make it dangerous to use the other two runways. Waterloo is the only airport in the state with three runways.
