W-SR Responds to Racist Comments at Baseball Game

The Waverly-Shell Rock administration has released a statement following accusations of racists comments from a student in the crowd being made at a black player from Charles City. The Charles City administration has posted their comments online as well saying comments allegedly included telling the African American player to “Get back to the fields!” and “You’re only here because of George Floyd.” Charles City’s statement went on to say those comments were a pattern of behavior their students of color have had to endure in many different places.

The following is the statement from W-SR:

On Saturday, June 27th W-SR Administration was alerted to allegations involving racist comments during a baseball game against our respected conference foe, the Charles City Comets. Since that time, multiple W-SR staff collaborated with Charles City staff members to investigate the incident to determine the facts and the individuals involved.

While we have addressed the incident with appropriate individual consequences, we also feel that it is important that we make a clear statement at this time. Any racist comments or behaviors are inappropriate, do not represent the safe and welcoming communities Waverly and Shell Rock are, and will not be tolerated.

W-SR strives to be a place that is welcoming and respectful of all individuals. We pledge to use this event as something to learn from today and into the future. We look forward to building bridges and working with our colleagues at Charles City to make amends.

Respectfully,

W-SR Administration
