A Waterloo City Council member is calling for Mayor Quentin Hart to divest from his ice cream shop because of a conflict of interest, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Margaret Klein, who in June announced she would challenge Hart for mayor, says it is fundamentally wrong for him to invest in a local ice cream shop in light of the city’s proposed mobile food truck ordinance. Hart confirmed on Wednesday he holds an ownership stake in 2 Scoops Ice Cream Shop and says like many of his predecessors he is happy to be a small business owner. He says he clarified with the county attorney that his involvement in the business is legal and does not pose a conflict of interest. The new ordinance will go into effect in January and would mandate fire inspections and licensing for food trucks and carts, including ice cream trucks.
