17 Officers Have Left WPD

A City Council meeting in Waterloo on Tuesday again focused largely on the city’s police, according to KWWL. In a work session to begin the meeting Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald spoke on improving morale within the police force. He first clarified the number of officers that had left the force under his watch. Six left for higher paying jobs, seven retired, and four left due to injury, adding up to 17 officers gone. Fitzgerald then laid out his plan to build morale by having one on one meetings with officers, adjusting communication and organization structure and shifting to a 10 hour shift. The griffin logo again drew plenty of heated debate in the remaining portion of the meeting. Ultimately a resolution to have the griffin logo removed from all Waterloo Police property by September 30 was passed. That, however, does not include weapons, which will be phased out as they are replaced.
