The Waverly-Shell Rock school district has released a statement about an incident in which a Charles City baseball player says racist comments were made toward him from beyond the fence while he was in the outfield.
The district cannot say who did it, how many were involved or even if they concluded that it did happen because all involved are minors. The school cites the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act as the reason for their inability to provide any details.
Charles City Schools has responded to the W-SR statement. Charles City, like New Hampton, is evaluating whether or not they want to remain in the 100 year old Northeast Iowa Conference. At a meeting of conference superintendents called by Charles City and New Hampton they asked for actions to be made to prevent future incidents of racism and poor sportsmanship. They also asked to be permitted not to play Waverly-Shell Rock in the next school year which would be the alleged victim’s senior year.
Following the idea being entertained to have Mason City join the conference Oelwein decided to leave to join the North Iowa Cedar League leaving only six teams after the 2020-21 season. If one more school leaves the conference likely need to add new teams or fold.
