On Tuesday the Senate passed a defense authorization bill that may require women to do something for the first time in history, register for the draft. Though the United States have not drafted since the Vietnam war in 1973, Republican leaders and women in both political parties are fully supportive of this new bill. This $602 billion bill has not been deemed law and is in the beginning stages.
Hilary Clinton is all for this new bill, saying she supports it.
Women who turn 18 after January 1, 2018 or later will be forced to register for the Selective Service, just like the men.
Those who turned 18 before 2018 are not affected by this new policy.
The White House has threatened to veto the bill, but the overwhelming support from Senators could help override the veto.
The Iowa National Guard has no comment on the new bill, but says, “We will continue to execute the policy decisions made by our civilian leaders.”
