Two Waterloo men have been arrested after attempting to steal communications cable from CenturyLink in Waterloo, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 49 year old Donald VanWie Jr and 52 year old Thomas Kaufmann were found inside the CenturyLink facility after police officers found a hole in the chain link fence. The men were standing next to bolt cutters, a wire cutter and a hand ax. Police found sections of telecommunications lines thrown over the fence. It is unclear what the pair planned to do with the line considering it was fiber optic and not copper, which is a common target of thieves due to its high value. VanWie and Kaufmann have been charged with second degree criminal mischief, third degree theft, trespass, and possession of burglary tools.
