USS The Sullivans Taking on Water

A Naval ship named for famous brothers from Waterloo is in danger of sinking. The USS The Sullivans was named for George, Frank, Joe, Matt, and Al Sullivan who all died during World War II when the USS Juneau sank. The USS The Sullivans is currently docked at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park and is one of the museum’s biggest draws, however she is listing significantly to the port side and is taking on water. Pumps are currently being used to get rid of the water but are struggling to keep up. The museum sites the harsh Buffalo winters and a drop in donations thanks to the pandemic. Repairs totalling more than $1 million are planned but the museum says The Sullivans needs $100,000 in emergency repairs now to keep her from sinking. As of Monday morning nearly $4,000 has been raised. You can donate at keepingourshipsafloat.org.
