GoFundMe Fraud

A Waterloo woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing from a GoFundMe account, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. In November of last year 40 year old Lindsay Dolan set up a GoFundMe for her brother who was injured in an accident. The online fundraiser raised over $3,500 to be used to help pay for surgeries and the cost of debilitation. Late in November and into December seven withdrawals were made, emptying the account, which was then closed. The injured brother never saw any of the money. Dolan claimed to police that the account had been hacked. However, an investigation found that the money had been funneled into an account set up in Dolan’s minor child’s name and then spent. Dolan has been charged with second degree theft. She has been released from jail pending trial.
