State Trooper Killed on Duty

An Iowa State Patrol Trooper based out of Oelwein has died following a crash while on duty. Trooper Ted Benda was responding to a call to assist the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office with a wanted suspect when he was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash near Postville a week ago. He was flown to La Crosse, Wisconsin. He succumbed to his injuries yesterday. He leaves behind a wife and four children. Benda began his public safety career in 2005 with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation before being assigned to the Special Enforcement Operations Bureau in Marquette. In 2016 he transferred to the Iowa State Patrol, assigned to District 8 in Mason City. Most recently he was working out of District 10 in Oelwein.
