A Waterloo man already facing charges related to the theft of catalytic converters picked up new charges on Monday, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 33 year old Shane Mehmen allegedly donned a disguise of a hard hat and a high visibility reflective vest to appear as a worker and quell suspicion as he allegedly stole the pollution control devices from eight Waterloo Schools vehicles. Text messages from Mehmen to a friend while Mehmen was en route to the Waterloo Schools administrative building revealed the plot. Mehmen is accused of selling the converters to Steven Jones, of Raymond, who then sold them to a metal recycling business. Jones has been arrested for his alleged role in the scheme.
