An Independence woman who murdered her ex husband has had her appeal to overturn her conviction denied, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. In 2017 Hillary Hunziker was denied custody of her nine year old son who she shared with Jason Hunziker. She then bought knives and flashlights before breaking into Jason Hunziker’s home and stabbing him 20 times. She then fled with her son to a relative’s home in Robins. When police caught up with her there she was still splattered with blood. Hilary Hunziker, in her appeal, argued that the judge in her case should have delayed the trial so an expert for the defense could travel to Iowa. She also argued she should have been given another court appointed attorney because of an unspecified conflict of interest, although she reported hearing voices on the jail intercom telling her that her attorney was not any good. The defense argued Hilary was insane on the night of the killing. She had seven prior mental health hospitalizations and had run out of medication around that time.
