Michael Lang has been found guilty of first degree Murder in the killing of Sgt Jim Smith during a standoff in Grundy Center in 2021, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Lang, a former candidate for sheriff in Grundy County, was also found guilty of Attempted Murder for shooting at the driver of an armored vehicle and Assault on an Officer for struggling with a Grundy Center officer during a traffic stop that started the whole ordeal. The jury heard evidence for three days last week before hearing closing arguments Monday. They returned their verdict after just two hours of deliberation.
