A youth mental health service will soon be opening in Waterloo, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Brownstone Youth Services is set to open at 1402 Logan Avenue. The center will begin with a capacity of eight children between the ages of 8 and 17, but could expand to handle 16 children at one time. The program will be for children who are getting into fights, skipping school, dealing with substance abuse, or are experiencing mental health breakdowns. Children must be referred to the program by a doctor, therapist, counselor, police department, or juvenile court services and can stay for up to five days. The building will have separate bedrooms for boys and girls and one for LGBTQ youth. Clinical Director Trisha Duitsman says that this is not a detention center or a shelter and is not for “bad” kids, but is a safe place for kids in crisis.
