Janesville School District has made the decision to go cell phone free. They say they believe this move is necessary to prioritize students’ mental health, focus, and overall well-being. They heavily cite “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt as evidence of why they need to make the change. Among the reasons laid out are the constant notifications, social media pressure, and the need to stay connected 24/7. The school district believes this prevents students from staying focused and excelling at school. School district authorities say going cell phone free will not only cut down on distractions but will allow students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Beginning in the second semester, students will seal their phones in a bag and the teacher will unlock that bag as the students leave at the end of the day or to go to an off-campus class. In case of an emergency families can email their students through the Janesville issued email address or call the main office. The administration met with the students earlier this month to discuss the new policy. They have provided answers to frequently asked questions on their website.
