Crossroads Mall in Waterloo, which has been a regional landmark since 1970 will be demolished, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The City Council last night unanimously approved a $20 million development agreement with Waterloo Crossroads Development LLC for the acquisition, demolition and redevelopment of the area. The mall currently houses just a U.S. Cellular store, two restaurants, a massage parlor, and space for military recruiters. At Home was the last anchor store, they closed last year. There are currently less than 15 jobs in the mall itself, down from more than 2,500 in 2001. The developer made a presentation at the council meeting suggesting apartments, basketball or pickelball courts, an outdoor plaza, a splash pad, and a dog park could fill the space along with stand alone retail space. None of those ideas have been set in stone to this point.
