A man convicted of shooting a five year old girl has escaped the Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 20 year old Daeonnis Gates left the facility on Sunday and failed to return. He is described as a Black male, standing six feet tall and weighing 188 pounds. He was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison after he and three others opened fire on a moving vehicle on Argyle Street in July of 2021. The girl was struck by a bullet in the arm. Gates was convicted of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury and Intimidation With a Weapon. He was placed on work release on March 12th. This is not the first time he has escaped from the facility. He also failed to return after a furlough in April and remained at large until July.
