Local Woman Sentenced for Killing a Man

A Waterloo woman has been sentenced for killing a man in January, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 19 year old Danielle Otterson pled guilty to chargeds of Involuntary Manslaughter and Possession of a Short-Barrel Shotgun. Otterson was wielding a sawed off shotgun on January 15th when she pulled the trigger and shot 19 year old Joseph Quail. Otterson told police that she was working the gun’s slide when her finger slipped onto the trigger and the gun fired. She also claimed she thought the gun was not loaded. Her attorneys argued for a deferred judgment and placement in a substance abuse program citing her lack of a proper upbringing and the fact she was in high school at the time of the shooting. The prosecutor argued she should be given two consecutive five year terms in prison due to her drug use and missed probation appointments while on pre-trial release. Ultimately the judge decided to sentence Otterson to concurrent five year teams in prison and ordered her to pay $150,000 in restitution.
