The Department of Natural Resources is investigating wastewater discharge in the Shell Rock River, according to KIMT. The DNR was called to a location in Nora Springs on Monday on a report of a frozen sewer line running below the river. Investigators believe the discharge started sometime on Saturday and is continuing to enter the river from a manhole on the riverbank. Attempts to unfreeze the line have been unsuccessful to this point, although authorities believe that will change later in the week with warmer temperatures. The river is frozen in that area and the wastewater is not visible on the surface. There have also been no visible effects on the river in the pockets of open water downstream, no reports of backups into basements, and no dead fish to this point.
