The City of Janesville Public Works Department says they have dealt with several backups in their sewer system in the past year due to people flushing items that should not be flushed. Among the biggest culprits are “flushable” wipes. The packages often advertise that they will disintegrate and can be flushed but that is just simply not true. Other things that should not be flushed include rags and towels, feminine hygiene products, trash, and grease from cooking or other chemicals and debris. Janesville Public Works says they routinely clean the sewer system but backups still happen, and just because it does not affect the flusher does not mean it won’t affect someone else.
