Fugitive Rammed Sheriff’s Vehicle

A fugitive from the Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility allegedly intentionally rammed a sheriff’s vehicle as he tried to elude law enforcement, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Police noticed a Kia Sportage driving without headlights on Broadway Street around 1:15 Sunday morning. The driver led law enforcement on a chase for several blocks before the driver jumped out and ran. At that point 21 year old Daeonnis Gates jumped into the drivers seat and drove away. He eventually hit a garage on Newton Street and then allegedly ran into an occupied squad car on purpose. He tried to run away but was taken into custody. He has been charged with Assault on a Peace Officer With a Weapon, first offense OWI, Public Intoxication, and Interference With Official Acts. He had been serving time in the Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility after shooting a five year old girl in July of 2021 before he escaped in December.
