City Issues Statement on Struggling Grass

The City of Waverly has released a statement regarding dead or struggling areas of grass at city parks and, most notably, Harlington Cemetery. They say the cause of the issues is something called “winter injury”. This is when there is no snow cover to insulate the turf and protect it from freezing temperatures. Areas of young or recently planted grass are especially susceptible to “winter injury”. Most of the affected areas were planted within the last two years. The Leisure Services department says they are committed to maintaining the beauty and dignity of the city’s cemetery and green spaces. They plan to reseed the affected areas as time allows. They expect most of that work to take place in the Fall. They finish the statement by saying that they understand that well-kept parks and cemetery is a sign of respect for loved ones and the community and they thank residents and visitors for their patience and understanding at this time.
