The City of Fairbank is alerting its citizens to a likely increase in the cost for electic usage, beginning in January. They say that Butler County REC is expected to see a significant increase in the cost of wholesale power, which they purchase from Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative before distributing it to the public. The increase to the public is expected to be around 9.5% with an additional increase projected for 2027. The City says costs are going up because of increased demand, federal and environmental policy changes, transmission and infrastructure upgrades, aging generation assets, and labor and supply chain costs.
