The owner of multiple Popeyes locations in Iowa, including in Waterloo, has reached a settlement with the corporate entity after allegedly using the Popeyes name and logo without authorization. Asif Poonja of Chicago and his company, Jam Equities, lost authorization to operate the franchises under the Popeyes name after failing to meet the companies standards, but continued to do so anyway. As part of the settlement Poonja can continue operating through June under a limited license with the expectation that the locations will be sold. Employees in Coralville and Waterloo say that they have not been paid in full. Poonja says that Coralville employees were fully paid but some checks were delayed because of snow. He refused to comment on the Waterloo employees being paid, according to KCRG.
