A letter carrier from New Hampton was recognized last week for saving a woman from a burning house in 2024, according to KCRG. Meagan Murray was working her normal route in September of 2024 when she noticed smoke coming from a home. She found the screen door open but the inside door locked. She began pushing and banging on the door until it finally opened. She went inside and was able to help the woman inside to safety. The house was deemed a total loss. For her actions Murray received the National Humanitarian of the Year Award from the National Association of Letter Carriers. She is the first Iowan to receive the award.
