Local VFW Post Closes

VFW Post 1623 in Waterloo has become defunct after nobody could be found to fill officer roles, according to KWWL. A team from the VFW Department of Iowa’s State Adjutant was sent in to try to get the post back on track after they struggled with financial trouble. The post’s commander and quartermaster were forced to resign and the post was put on suspension until those positions could be filled through nominations and a vote. Nobody was ever nominated for either position and therefore nobody was ever elected. There were more than 80 members of the post but the state Adjutant, Russ Saffell, says only five people showed up to the meeting. The post was then declared defunct by the national organization. Saffell said nobody wanted to run for either position because “nobody wants a soup sandwich.” Waterloo could reopen a new post under a new number but would need at least 25 members and at least 15 would need to be new.
