Cedar Falls Public Safety is warning the public about the spread of misinformation on social media after a reported attempted kidnapping near North Cedar Elementary. Police say they were notified of an incident on Sunday in which an adult allegedly got out of a car and chased some children. After an investigation, police determined that a delivery person had stopped a vehicle with their hazards on and got out and walked to a nearby house. At no point did the individual follow, chase, or otherwise interact with the children. Police say social media can be a valuable tool, but it can also lead to the rapid spread of misinformation and fear in the community. They encourage residents to rely on verified information and allow law enforcement to thoroughly investigate reports before conclusions are drawn.
