With hot and humid conditions expected throughout the area this week, Waterloo will open several cooling stations, pools and splash pads for residents, according to KWWL. For admission residents can get into Byrnes Aquatic Center and the Cedar Valley SportsPlex Pool. Free options include the Gates Park Splash Pad, Mark’s Park Spray Pad, the Waterloo Center for the Arts, the Waterloo Regional Airport, the Waterloo Public Library, and Young Arena. Officials say people should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or shaded areas and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. They also encourage people to limit alcohol and caffeine intake, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.
