Authorities say the two people killed Tuesday in Mason City were the grandparents of a man facing double murder charges.
According to a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, the two people killed were 61-year-old Kenneth Hackbart and his wife, 64-year-old Kathleen Hackbart. Police arrested Codie Matz, 25, on Tuesday afternoon in Polk County and he is in the Cerro Gordo County Jail facing two counts of first-degree murder.
Matz lived at the residence, 327 27th St. SW. in Mason City, with the Hackbarts. Matz, the grandson of the Hackbarts, is being held on $1 million bond and is alleged to have stabbed the victims at 7:23 a.m. Tuesday, according to court documents.
Matz is scheduled for an initial appearance Nov. 17 at 1:15 at the Cerro Gordo County courthouse.
Mason City police officers were called to the residence for a welfare check at 7:43 a.m. Tuesday and two bodies were found inside. Matz was not there at that time.
