Arrest as Former Courier Building Broken Into

A Waterloo man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into the former Courier building, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Police were called to the building around 2:20 on Sunday afternoon after someone spotted an open door and a man inside wearing a headlamp and carrying a duffel bag. Police found 51 year old Donald VanWie Jr. a block away. He was carrying a bag that contained a reciprocating saw, metal snips, flashlights, and a box cutter. A second bag was found containing wires and copper. VanWie has been charged with third degree Burglary and Possession of Burglary Tools. He has previous convictions for similar crimes. A contractor had to be rescued from the building on Friday after part of the second story floor gave way while the contractor was surveying the condition of the building. The Courier was the last occupant and they moved out of the building in December 2011.
