Work to reconstruct U.S. 218 in Bremer County from the Cedar River to Iowa 116 in Waverly will require lane closures to pave median crossovers and add temporary pavement beginning on Thursday, April 2, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office. This portion of the project is expected to be completed by late April.
For the remainder of the construction season, traffic on U.S. 218 will be configured in a head-to-head traffic pattern so crews can complete major portions of grading and permanent paving. Access to all businesses and residential areas will be always maintained, with additional signs in place to direct you around the construction zone.
In some areas, location access will be reduced to right-in and right-out traffic movements. Digital message signs will be in place in advance to help you identify upcoming traffic pattern changes.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
