Bodensteiner Leaving A.D. Job for Position at Wartburg

Greg Bodensteiner has been named the executive director for operations at Wartburg College effective January 5, 2026. Bodensteiner will continue to be the girls basketball coach at Waverly-Shell Rock.

Bodensteiner, who has served as the activity director at Waverly-Shell Rock High School for the last five years, brings experience in managing resources, coordinating facilities, organizing schedules and leading people to this new role.

“I have been able to see Wartburg through many different lenses, as a coach on staff, the parent of a current student, a Waverly community member and working with Wartburg in my current position, and I have always been impressed,” Bodensteiner said. “I have many great relationships at Wartburg, and I am excited to build even more across campus.”

After starting his teaching career as a physical education teacher in Bellevue, Nebraska, he moved to the Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools as an alternative education teacher in 2007. He was promoted to activity director in 2021, overseeing 20 athletic programs and 120 coaches. In addition to his daytime duties, Bodensteiner also has coached women’s golf at Wartburg and served as a program director for Iowa Eclipse AAU Basketball. He currently is the head girls basketball coach at Waverly-Shell Rock.

“Greg brings great passion for Wartburg to this position. His experience in managing complex logistics and facilities, as well as his collaborative leadership style, make him a great addition to the Wartburg community,” said Kelly Flege, Wartburg’s vice president for financial innovation.

As Wartburg’s executive director for operations, Bodensteiner will provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the college’s operational functions, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence through efficient systems, innovative processes and optimized resource management.

“I had an incredible experience at Wartburg as the women’s golf coach, and I knew Wartburg was the type of community that I wanted to be part of should the opportunity ever arise,” Bodensteiner said. “When I saw this position, I knew it was something that could be a great fit for me personally and professionally.”

Bodensteiner lives in Waverly with his wife, Amy. They have four children: Brenna, a sophomore at Wartburg; Britt and Brady, seniors at W-SR; and Brooks, a sixth grader.
