The Waverly Shell Rock Board of Education has approved the sale of West Cedar Elementary to the Waverly Municipal Housing Commission to become low-income housing, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The board considered two bids, both for $5,000. The other was for a nonprofit community arts center. The housing commission says they have three possible options for the building, create 10-15 apartments, create fewer apartments and use a portion of the building for nonprofits, or tear down the building and construct new apartment units. Board vice president Jes Kettleson noted that the decision between the two bids, that he said both had merit, was what was a want and what was a need. The board determined the community needs low-income housing. The board will also be selling Carey Elementary but will hang on to Southeast Elementary for other uses after students move into the new elementaries.
