A swimming pool in Waterloo that had not yet opened will stay closed for the entire season. Byrnes Pool had remained closed as it underwent repairs to the main drain system in the diving well but crews found that the damage was worse than expected. This discovery has prompted officials to announce that the pool will not open this year. To help deal with this closure, both Gate Pool and the Cedar Valley Sportsplex will offer extended hours. Some have advocated for new aquatic facilities to replace Byrnes and Gate altogether as they are both nearly 40 years old.
