Waterloo firefighters found lethal levels of carbon monoxide in an apartment on Thursday, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The residents at 428 Oaklawn Avenue called 911 after their carbon monoxide alarm went off. When Waterloo Fire Rescue arrived on scene they found readings to be around 50 parts per million, which is when alarms will trigger, but is not lethal. They traced the carbon monoxide to the apartment next door where they found readings of 100 parts per million and 2,400 parts per million near the furnace in the basement. There were people in the home who all reported headaches, a common symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning. They did not have a carbon monoxide alarm in the home and likely would have died had neighbors not had an alarm.
