Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson will begin hiring civilian detention officers to transition deputy position found in the current jail staff.
Black Hawk County is among a few counties to use deputies to staff the jail.
The county said recent changes to the law that recognizes the role and authority of civilian detention officers.
Black Hawk County has begun accepting applications for the positions.
