Change for Teen Drivers

The Bremer County Treasurer’s Office has announced a change to the Minor School Licence. Beginning July 1st, the Minor School License will be renamed the Special Minor’s Restricted License and will come with some additional changes. With the SMRL the teen will be allowed to drive to and from their place of work. The teen will also be able to declare three separate residences they are allowed to drive to and from, as long as they are within 25 miles of any approved work or school location. There will be harsher penalties for traffic offenses. Any violation will result in a 3 month suspension of the SMRL as well as a 3 month delay before the teen can upgrade to their Intermediate License following their 16th birthday. Finally, SMRL holders will not be allowed to drive to a school they are not enrolled in to be a spectator of an extracurricular activity, they must be a participant in the activity to drive to another school district.
