Charles City Teacher Fired Over Short Story

An 8th grade teacher in Charles City has resigned after parents complained about language in some reading material that had not been approved by the school district. Alecia Feckers had her resignation agreement approved on Monday by the Charles City Board of Education. Feckers had introduced a short story called “Catch, Pull, Drive” by Schuyler Bailer from an anthology called Fresh Ink. The story is Bailer’s experience as the first trans athlete to compete for all four years of college. The story contains language that parents called vulgar, with transphobic and homophobic slurs.
