City Attorney Bill Werger to Retire

Bill Werger started his 41 year legal career after graduating from the University of Iowa Law School and being admitted to the Iowa Bar on June 17, 1983. After being admitted to practice in Iowa, he joined a law firm in Iowa City, spent several years in the General Counsel’s office of Farm Bureau Insurance in West Des Moines and twenty years in private practice in Manchester before moving to Waverly in the summer of 2009 where he spent the last 15 years.

Bill joined a local law firm where he practiced until 2014. He became the part-time Waverly City Attorney in January 2012 and in June of 2014, he joined the City full-time as City Attorney and Community Development Director.

During the past 10 years, Bill has had many roles with the City, working primarily with Economic Development and Zoning, but also with other City Departments including Engineering and Public Works. He worked with a number of city commissions, including Planning and Zoning, Economic Development, Municipal Housing and Historic Preservation.

Bill represented the City in traffic court cases and civil litigation matters and advised the City Council and Staff regarding various legal matters.

Outside of work, Bill and his wife Tammy play golf and fish and take Leo (the Lab) on long walks.

Bill will retire from his City position on June 30, 2024 and his last day in the office will be on June 28th. Feel free to stop in and wish him well at his office from 1-3 pm that day.

The City of Waverly would like to thank Bill for his service to the City over the past 10 years and wish him well in his retirement.
