Waterloo City Hall will move into the former Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier building on the east side of Cedar River, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. A deal was struck between the city and Rodney Blackwell, who owns the now-empty Courier building. It is a swap deal, so in exchange for the Courier building Blackwell will get City Hall, which currently houses the Human Rights Department, the Waterloo Housing Authority, and the Neighborhood Services Department, as well as the old Carnegie Library. Blackwell also gets a $6.1million economic development grant to redevelop the buildings. That project would need to begin within the next four years. He also will receive a 70% tax rebate on the buildings for 15 years, which is common, according to city planning and development director, Noel Anderson. The Courier building will need to be slightly altered, specifically for the police department. They will need to construct locker rooms, meeting rooms, and holding cells. The Courier left the building back in 2022.
