Dowling Catholic freshman football coach, Claude Wilkins, suffered cardiac arrest en route to their game against Waterloo West on Friday, according to KWWL. Dowling’s athletic trainer, Blake Willey, was able to immediately start CPR after the bus pulled over, perhaps saving Wilkins’ life. Dowling varsity assistant and former Columbus football coach Aundra Meeks says Willey was not originally supposed to travel with the freshman but decided to at the last moment. Wilkins was taken to MercyOne Waterloo, where he underwent surgery and had stents placed in his heart. The freshman game was cancelled before Dowling beat West 55-0 in the varsity game.
