A Dollar General planned to be built near the Lost Island Waterpark and Theme Park currently under construction has failed to get City Council approval, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Councilman Ray Feuss said he did not want Dollar General to be the first impression of Waterloo for visitors to the area, noting that the city already struggles with its perception among outsiders. He also cited a lack of upkeep among other Dollar General stores in Waterloo. Councilwoman Sharon Juon also voiced her concern about the perception of the city visitors would get from the store. The building of Dollar General stores has proven to be controversial in many communities.
