Court Upholds Removing Children from Home

The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the removal of two children from a home in Waterloo after their sibling died under suspicious circumstances in 2021, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. In the initial case, Waterloo Fire Rescue was responding to another call when a mother handed them an unresponsive 2 month old baby identified only as B.J. Medics began CPR and rushed the baby to Allen Hospital. Doctors were able to revive him. He was then flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for what was believed to be a medical issue. Doctors then discovered head injuries and retinal hemorrhaging leading to the suspicion of abuse. The two older children were removed from the home and placed in foster care. The mother then provided a detailed confession to police and demonstrated what she did on a doll. The next day the father committed suicide on a Cedar Falls bike trail. The mother then recanted her story and claimed the father had shaken the baby. The baby died on December 21, 2021. His manner of death officially remains undetermined. The mother was struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues and was not successful with treatment. Her parental rights were terminated in February of this year. The Iowa Court of Appeals upheld that decision.
