Dealership Employee Stopped Thief with Pistol

A Waterloo car dealership employee detained an alleged thief at gunpoint until police could respond on Tuesday night, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The worker noticed a man later identified as 51 year old David Hocking sitting inside a vehicle on the lot after hours. When he approached Hocking, he got out of the vehicle and allegedly attempted to stab the worker with a screwdriver. The worker then drew his pistol and wrestled Hocking to the ground where he held him until police arrived on scene. Hocking has been charged with first degree Robbery, Possession of Burglary Tools, and Trespassing. He was already awaiting trial in several other cases. Hocking allegedly failed to pay for $22 worth of food at Newton’s Cafe on September 16th. On September 6th he allegedly damaged an elevator door at the Hotel President. In May of 2022 he allegedly rode his bike into a business and claimed to be the Waterloo police chief. When he was approached by real officers he claimed to be the Black Hawk County Sheriff and was running an internal affairs investigation. In February of 2022 he was allegedly caught entering vehicles parked at Reedy’s Auto Sales.
