Distant Online Threat Investigated by Police

The following was sent to families in the Waverly-Shell Rock school district

Waverly-Shell Rock Parents/Guardians and Community,

The Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District and Waverly Police Department are aware of a school violence threat circulating via social media outlets. The origin of the threat circulating is not a Waverly-Shell Rock student or resident. It is believed that the threat originated in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, where an individual was taken into custody earlier this week for making threats toward a school. The Waverly Police Department believes there is no credible threat to the Waverly-Shell Rock Schools or community based on this specific threat.

The safety of students, staff, and our community is our top priority. We thank the individuals who came forth to report their concern.

Please talk with your child(ren) about the seriousness of passing around social media posts that threaten violence, and please to continue to bring any threats or concerns to the attention of law enforcement or school officials. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

David Hill, Superintendent Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District
