Beginning Monday face masks will be required in Waterloo schools, according to KWWL. Initially students and staff members had the option to either wear a mask or a face shield but the shields have now been deemed not sufficient. Students and staff can still wear a shield but will also have to wear a mask. An exception in that case will be made in the event that, during instruction, communication is impaired by the mask. The policy change was made in collaboration between the school district, Black Hawk County Public Health and the Iowa Department of Public Health.
