False Winnings Case Overturned

The Iowa Court of Appeals has overturned a case of alleged False Claim of Winning at the Isle Casino in 2020, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. After a trial last year 35 year old Sydney Slaughter was found guilty of the crime. In November of 2020 she was with Anthony McNeese at the Isle when McNeese appeared to win a $4,000 jackpot. At the time he owed $1,300 in unpaid child support and $41,000 in fines. When casino staff came to confirm the jackpot Slaughter claimed she won the prize. After reviewing the security camera footage Slaughter allegedly admitted McNeese was playing the machine. The Iowa Court of Appeals found that even though Slaughter admitted to the alleged crime the State failed to prove Slaughter did not make the wager. In their decision they point out that Slaughter and McNeese seemed to be playing in tandem, playing the same machine and using money from each of their possession. McNeese pleaded guilty at a 2021 hearing and was sentenced to probation.
