Iowa officials are pushing for high schoolers to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, which is required to qualify for most financial aid for college. KWAY talked to W-SR school counselor Barbara Davis on Monday about what the school is doing to prepare students for their college expenses. Davis says that the school holds meetings throughout the year for students on college planning, with guest speakers talking in-depth on financial aid. Now that the date that FAFSA’s can be turned in has been moved to October 1st from January 1st, the school has scheduled a meeting for parents of Juniors in May to prepare them for applying. Davis also mentioned FAFSA-Ready Iowa, an organization that holds events around the state including Cedar Falls and Waterloo that help families fill out their FAFSA. Jon Holland from the Iowa College Access Network, who works with students and families one-on-one to help them with their individual needs. He is one of the usual speakers at the financial aid meetings the school holds. For more information visit www.icansucceed.org.
