A fire broke out in the compactor of a Waverly garbage truck on Friday. The operators of the truck were able to quickly determine the fire was started by a rechargeable vacuum cleaner with the battery still attached. They removed it from the truck and put the fire out. The City of Waverly is warning citizens not to dispose of rechargeable items with the batteries still inside. They say these items are classified as hazardous waste and put the operators at risk and can cause damage to the trucks. Instead, rechargeable items should be taken to the Regional Collection Center at the Bremer County Landfill.
