Fire Leaves House a Total Loss

Thursday the Charles City Fire Department was sent to a rural home on fire Southwest of Charles City.

When fire crews arrived, smoke and fire could be seen from the exterior of the home. No one was at the residence during the fire.

The fire department reports that the home is likely a complete loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they believe that spontaneous combustion of oily rags not properly stored caused the fire. Fire crews stayed on scene for about three hours.

No injuries were reported and the Red Cross has been contacted to assist any needs of the displaced family.
